When it comes to journalling, there’s no wrong or right way to do it. Journalling is a creative activity so you can relax and simply do what works for you. If you’re stuck and not sure what type of journal you need, ask yourself these three questions.
1. What Do You Want More of in Your Life?
Identifying what you would like more of in your life is a great place to start this process. Are you feeling frazzled and overwhelmed by too many demands on your time? Or are you entering a new phase of life that will involve plenty of new adventures, expanding your family, or starting a new business?

A different type of journal would be ideal for each of these scenarios. If you need more peace and calm in your life, consider a meditation journal where you can record how long you’ve meditated, positive affirmations that resonate with you, and concerns that are weighing on you.
If your upcoming adventures involve visiting and exploring new areas, perhaps a travel journal where you can record where you visit, along with dates and details of each trip is in order. On the other hand, a daily journal would be ideal for documenting the arrival of a new baby, while a business journal will give you a place to record and reflect on all of your plans and ideas for its success.
2. How Would You Like to Grow?
Starting new chapters in your life is also an ideal time to grow as an individual. For example, a travel journal allows you to record what you learn about yourself, interesting people you’ve met, and new experiences you’ve encountered along the way. On the other hand, a daily or business journal can help you identify recurring patterns and challenges you face, while giving you the opportunity to address them in new, positive ways. In each case, you’ll have a chance to consider what you really want in your life moving forward.
3. What Would You Like to Change about Your Life?
If there is an area of your life that has been an ongoing struggle for you, a dedicated journal can help you understand the underlying issues and obstacles that are holding you back. For example, if you find it challenging to maintain a healthy diet and fitness routine, a health & wellness journal can give you a dedicated space to explore your emotions and record your feelings and triggers, as well as your successes. This can help you avoid stressful situations and do more of the things that are working for you.
Don’t feel like you have to commit to one journal style right away. You can start journalling and figure it out as you go. For now, just relax and enjoy the journey.
